Background

Nannelle Elizabeth Caldwell was born on August 30, 1913, the third child of Harriet and Aldous Caldwell, both wizards. Older than her were Alberic Humphrey and Denton Willard, who were eight and six respectively when their sister was born. When Nannelle was three, Trafford Kade was born, and when she was five, Verity Berenice joined the family. The children were separated enough in age that, aside from their home studies, they were not disposed to spending much time together. Harriet spent all of her time at home with her children, teaching them various subjects of academia, and keeping house. She believed her life’s worth reflected in how well kept her children and house were, and how well her children behaved, so she ran her house in almost a slave-driver’s manner. The children, however, were used to this, and all but one were quite well-behaved. Trafford was the trouble-maker of the family, and spent much of his time performing the menial tasks in which his mother would employ him for punishment. Aldous and Harriet were both from wealthy families, which allowed for both of them to stay home with the children and be “unemployed.” However, Aldous was unable to help in Harriet’s structured plans, and decided that he may as well make himself useful. He opened a bookshop, specializing in locating old and rare books, in the small town in Wales where they lived. The shop was not wildly popular, but it did turn a small profit, which helped him justify keeping it open.

Home life as Nell remembered it was very soothing and consistent. The daily schedule was always the same, with very little variation. To some, this may have seemed like an uninteresting way to live, but for Nellie, meticulous and methodical as she was, it was perfect. She knew exactly what was coming next, always, and Nellie was a child who liked to know. She liked to know everything she could know about what was going on, and would often pester her mother to frustration for more details. Her father, however, loved to keep supplying Nellie — and all of his other children — with all the details they could handle, and perhaps more than they even needed to know. This was a cause for high strife between Harriet and Aldous, but aside from that fact, the two had a peaceful marriage. Harriet and Aldous had both been Ravenclaw students during their time at Hogwarts, as had all their parents, so Harriet found herself hoping (and pushing) for her children to be sorted as the same. She encouraged them to be studious and to search for information beyond their normal realm of knowledge. When Alberic was sorted into Gryffindor, Aldous was thrilled for him, but Harriet was devastated, and actively refused to speak to her oldest son until the summer holidays came around again. Denton disappointed his mother, also, sorting into Gryffindor as well. Tensions ran a bit high as Nellie’s time to head to school came up soon. She was very excited to go to school, because of how highly her parents and brothers spoke of the school, but was certainly frightened at incurring her mother’s wrath the way she had seen happen with Alberic and Denton for their first years at school. Nellie found herself hoping upon hope every day for a month before leaving for school that she would sort into Ravenclaw. Several days before she was to head off to school, her mother and father took her to Diagon Alley to get most of her supplies (as her father had supplied rare editions of her books for her), and Nellie could hardly contain her excitement. She felt no fear or anxiety as she boarded the large red train and waved frantically at her parents from the window, clutching her new kitten, Barley. She was excited to be going, and between the atmosphere the train station held, and being father from home than she had been in her life to date, she had forgotten all about the pressing need to be sorted ‘appropriately’. Nellie was going to Hogwarts!

Description

Nannelle is a small girl, even considering her age. She is by no means the smallest eleven-year-old there ever was, or even the smallest in her year, but she is most certainly smaller than is average. She has a round face, full with baby fat and perhaps a bit of more stubborn pudge. Her eyes are a clear, strong blue, and seem to twinkle mischievously all the time. Her skin is fair and smooth, free from blemish as yet, save for the freckles which lightly dot her nose and cheeks. While her figure is plump, the girl is by no means without shape, her hips and waist starting to show the first hints of her transformation towards womanhood. Nell has dark hair, which is long and straight, hanging in a thick braid down her back most of the time. Her hair is her pride and joy, it being of a healthy, sheeny color, and also being thick as it is, she can’t help but want to show it off whenever possible. Overall, the effect of her is ’round’, and the girl appears unbothered by this.
