Background
The Brennan family is quite well-known in the Silverdale area, particularly as the two ancestors of the family’s existence in the area were founders of Scattergood School: Pleasance Maguire and Campbell Brennan. The two began a romance and later a family once the castle was completed and the school well established. For generations, paintings and photos of Brennan and Maguire descendants have graced the walls of both Brennan and Maguire halls in Scattergood school. The two, who grew to be quite good friends once they settled in the “new world,” were married in 1739. They had three children, all of whom went to the school. Two of them were twin girls, both of whom were put into the Maguire Hall at their mother’s request when the two were old enough to attend the school. Their son was put into Brennan hall. This created the tradition that children should be placed in the halls in which their parents had been residents when they were at school.
For generations, the occasional Brennan descendants were placed into Brennan hall, though the occasional student would be placed into Maguire hall instead. In 1911, Baxter Maguire Brennan was born as the first son of Harris Baxter Brennan and Maylie Cecily Hargrove, who was a distant cousin of his – descended from one of Pleasance Maguire’s younger sisters. Maylie was six years younger than Baxter, and knew very little of Harris at school. As with many generations before them, the two had been fairly destined to one another from birth. The two quickly married and just under a year later, Baxter was born. He was followed by two more children, another son and a daughter who died very young.
Baxter made his way through school easily, though he had fairly average representation through his classes. Temperance Primrose Fitzroy was a student in Maguire hall four years his junior and as with the marriage of Baxter’s parents, theirs was one contrived from the time they were still small children. Though the two knew they were destined for one another, they spent very little time getting to know one another, a fact that had little to do with their residing in different halls and being four years separated.
Shortly after Temperance graduated from Scattergood School, the two were married in a lavish ceremony. Just after Temperance’s twentieth birthday, she gave birth to twins: Lucie Mariele and Lanie Josiane Brennan. With her hands full after giving birth to the twins, the inklings of career the girl had hoped for were gone in wisps of smoke. Two years after the birth of the twins, another girl, Maylie Cecily joined the family. By this time, Temperance was quite adept at caring for children, and with the help of a live-in nanny, she found more and more time for herself as Maylie grew to be nearly two years old. Just after Maylie’s second birthday, she found herself pregnant with a fourth child. In September of 1936, Paige Lisanne Brennan joined the family, their fourth girl. Baxter, who loved all of his daughters, could not help but be somewhat disappointment at the lack of heir as yet.
Paige grew older in the shadow of her exuberant older sisters. Lucie and Lanie seemed destined for the exciting life expected for attractive and charismatic debutantes by the time they were ten years old. Maylie followed in their footsteps, a dutiful and worshiping younger sister. Paige, who was seen as a baby even by Maylie who was only three years her junior, seemed the misfit of the flock of girls. This was only exacerbated when she was no longer the youngest child, receiving special attentions from her parents on the occasion. Arthur Baxter joined the family when Paige was nearly seven years old. Baxter was thrilled that he and Temperance had produced an heir to the Baxter family name, and to little Paige it seemed the greatest tragedy of all. Her sisters constantly overshadowed her, and now there was Arthur, her father’s golden boy to steal away the bits of attention that she had once received. The already shy girl seemed to disappear almost entirely, and family portraits seemed to highlight this fact.
Lucie and Lanie were already at Scattergood when Arthur was born – both placed into Brennan residence hall, and Maylie looked forward to going the next year. Even when it was just Paige and Arthur at home with Temperance daily, Paige kept mostly to herself. She was an avid reader, enjoying mostly fanciful stories involving the more exotic magical creatures, and those which told about the lives of muggles. She was nine years old when she first exhibited magic. Her mother had confiscated a fiction book, chiding her instead to spend more time at her school books, which only frustrated the child. She was upset enough over the confiscation that she soon found the book back in her own hands, much to her mother’s surprise. This was almost a non-event for her parents, who fully expected their children to have magical ability. It was soon eclipsed by baby Arthur who, at two years old, displayed his own first magical instance, and once again Paige found herself in the background.
When Paige was eleven years old, she, too, went to Scattergood School for the Magical Arts, following her three older sisters into Brennan Hall. This kept her in the shadows, as many of the students who knew her sisters were expecting another charismatic Brennan girl, and instead finding a wallflower who rarely socialized. Paige found herself largely alone during her first year at school, and while this helped her marks in her classes, she was a lonely girl.
During her second year, Paige found solace in a friend of the same year, a girl whom she had seen during the previous year but never spoken to. Primrose Barrow was more outgoing than Paige herself was, and as a result, the two ended up being a remarkably unlikely but steadfast pair. They complimented one another – Paige’s shy, quiet, thoughtful demeanor contrasted with Primrose’s outgoing, chatty, impulsive one. They seemed to balance one another out. Paige’s grades did not suffer for this friendship, and instead the awkward and plump girl seemed to grow into a bit of confidence. Few could say that she was even close to as charismatic as her older sisters, but she was certainly headed in that direction. At the end of her second year, she and Primrose agonized over the class choices that they were to make, which would affect their future careers. In the end, Paige and Primrose decided that they would both take Care of Magical Creatures, and Paige picked Magical Music and Muggle Studies to complete her list, while Primrose chose Ancient Runes and Magical Art instead. Paige found that she was even more looking forward to the start of her third year as she and Paige acquired another friend by the end of the year: Genevieve Allaway, a girl in their year who was resident of Waller Hall. The three made exuberant promises to spend time together over the summer holiday, making it the first from which Paige could expect more than time spent in the family’s ample library.
Personality
Paige is reserved, to say the least. She is generally disinclined to assert herself in situations, though at nearly fourteen she has become more apt to voice her opinion than she had been at age eleven. She rarely raises her voice above a near-whisper, and even when her temper is provoked is inclined to sulk rather than yell. Only when in the company of her close friends does she ever seem to truly relax, though this relaxation is subject to disappear as soon as one of her older sisters appears on the scene. It is during these occasions that the girl reverts to a sullen state, her cheeks stained the color of beets. She is a thoughtful girl, inclined to muse philosophically, much to the amusement and occasional annoyance of her friends.
Description
With angles and curves in all the wrong places, Paige is the epitome of teenage awkwardness. Her thick-rimmed spectacles and slightly blemished skin do nothing to help this image. The glasses cover eyes of light blue which are edged with thick brown lashes. Her skin, though spotty due to her adolescence, is faira nd she has no freckles of which to speak. Her dark brown hair falls long in soft curls which seem to have been teased and primped by someone other than herself to fall nicely on her shoulders. It is parted off to the right side and often pulled back into childish pigtails. Paige is quite petite, and despite hopes for growth and tall parents and siblings is shorter than most of the other girls in her year. Her height does nothing to help her very round middle, which she finds difficult to hide except while in her school robes. All of her puppy fat – as her parents call it – seems to have settled at her middle, leaving skinny arms and legs with no feminine curves as yet.
